Every city has borders, but what about the ones we don’t see?

The Hidden Borders of New York City

Five boroughs, 32 community school districts, 51 council districts, 59 community boards, 77 police precincts...these are the borders within New York on a map. But in a city with one of the most diverse populations in the world, there are other lines that divide us socially, linguistically, ethnically, economically.

As national politics concerns itself with walls and physical barriers, other, invisible borders regulate the way New Yorkers live their lives. You may not even know they exist.

These hidden borders affect who we speak to, what we build, when we play, where we learn, how we make money. They are regulated and unregulated, created by laws or by their absence, and they lead to surprising revelations about a city that 8.5 million people call home.
